The purpose of the Music Enrichment Lessons at CCS is to grow the gifts and talents of students and help foster students’ love for music so they may be used to the glory of God. Performance and ministry opportunities are given throughout the year to students.
Guitar lessons will be tailored to the students’ speed and ability. Lesson are meant to be fun, yet productive. This is achieved by focusing on students’ interests and abilities in which they aspire to learn. Students will be educated in a mix of basic to advanced music theory, the importance of proper picking techniques, intonation, pitch and tone. Every lesson begins with warm ups and assorted exercises in order to strengthen skills.

Piano lessons will equip students to not only play the piano, but be able to understand and love music for a lifetime. Instructors will tailor students’ interests and needs by using a variety of method books plus a supplemental repertoire including classical, popular, and jazz music as well as worship music and hymns.

Voice lessons will focus on proper singing technique. Proper technique will be developed through specific exercises for proper breathing, vocalization, and clear enunciation. Included in these exercises will be an exploration of head and chest voice. Through all these exercises, the students will gain a more controlled singing voice as well as a healthy confidence in their vocal ability.

Being able to possess the ability to express oneself through music is an awesome privilege to give back to our Creator in glorifying His name. The flute instructor will nurture students and promote a strong sense of self-worth, discipline, and responsibility while teaching the foundations of flute instruction. One of the goals of our flute instructor is to create the first flute choir at CCS.

Music Teacher Bios
Micki Burns has been teaching piano to students of all ages for over 18 years. She graduated from Campbell University as a piano major with a degree in Church Music. She served as church pianist at a local church for 15 years and in 2009, began serving as a pianist, keyboardist at Carmel Baptist Church. Micki’s goal for her students is to receive a good foundation in piano through music theory, technique and repertoire. Her desire is to help develop their skills in piano while having fun and in turn, strengthen their appreciation for the gift of music.
Cassidy Cummings is a musician who has been leading worship in the Charlotte area for 10 years. She has worked as an assistant worship director and youth music director and loves to work with young people. She enjoys leading worship at Carmel Christian’s annual Windy Gap retreat. She also works in the Extended Day Program with 4’s, TK, and Kindergarten students. Cassidy has a passion for music and worship and will be teaching the basics of music theory and guitar technique to our beginner students.
Kelly has been teaching private guitar and voice lessons at CCS for the last 5 years. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, she pursued her passion for performance at The Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach, SC. and then continued on to Nashville, TN where she worked as a session singer, background singer, demo singer, and songwriter. Kelly’s desire is to fully equip students with the basics of music theory, ear training, proper vocal and guitar technique. She achieves this through a relaxed, fun, and inviting atmosphere for all of her students.
Julie is entering her second year to CCS as a flute instructor. She has been playing the flute for nearly 25 years and have been teaching private flute lessons for 12 years. She conducted and led a flute choir at Cortland Christian Academy for the past 6 years. She has also participated in many music organizations including the Charlotte Flute Choir. One of Julie’s goals is to create a flute choir at CCS this year.
Stefanie is a graduate of Purdue University at Fort Wayne where she majored in musical theatre while conducting musical theatre productions and accompanying both dance and theatre classes. She teaches students of all ages, focusing on building a solid, well-rounded knowledge of piano and music theory and providing an encouraging atmosphere where students can feel proud of the progress they make throughout the year.
